LEGO 21366 Floating Sea Otters are adorable with the mother and pup on a vibrant water base, but the pirate in me saw a pile of brown curved slopes and thought it’s a good idea to build a sailing tall ship.

I originally planned to release this before the April 2026 Star Wars wave, but I got stuck refining the ship for days without a result I was happy with. With time running out, I almost scrapped the project before giving it one last push.

Starting with a tumblehome hull and pointed bow, things finally clicked. The mix of yellow plates and reddish brown curves created colourful gun ports, with the same design language flowing up to the quarterdeck and poop deck. I envisioned it as a single deck corvette, complete with a rowboat on the waist and fine deck detailing using 1x1 elements.

The masts were the biggest challenge. After experimenting with a three stud wide centre hull, I reverted to a two stud solution that allowed proper centering using two 2x4 jumper plates. Long black plates formed the bowsprit and masts, while tan elements suggest partially furled sails.

For the base, I scaled things down due to limited dark turquoise pieces, since much of the original set is taken up by the otter. The trans-light blue inverted curve plates create dynamic waves, all 18 used here, while the rock feature remains as a natural landmark alongside a wooden pier on the port side. Hidden within the bay are the two tiny otters, and the clam shells are repurposed as the centrepiece of the display.

Sometimes you have to sacrifice something cute to build something epic!
