The D-Wing starfighter is a custom MOC based on concept art by the talented artist Matthew Savage. Its unusual half-circle “D-shaped” silhouette, prominent air intakes, and worn Rebel-style markings immediately stood out to me. The design features a thin forward profile that thickens toward the rear, distinctive engine housings, and mechanical greebling behind the intakes, giving it a sleek but rugged starfighter look that fits alongside Rebel Alliance ships.
Recreating this ship in LEGO required a heavily SNOT-based internal framework to achieve the thin curved D-shaped form while keeping the model sturdy. The internal structure rotates brick directions to expose studs where needed for both the top and bottom surfaces, allowing the hull to remain smooth while maintaining strength.
The finished model captures the thin nose profile, detailed air intakes, greebled mechanical areas, and compact engine housings seen in the original concept art. The cockpit canopy opens to reveal a detailed interior with room for a pilot and storage space behind the seat. The model balances sleek shaping with strong construction, making it sturdy during the build and durable enough for display or the occasional swoosh.
To keep the parts cost down, I used cheaper, alternate colors for the hidden SNOT framework (they’re obvious in the parts list: colors in nougat, lavender, blue, green, etc.). When sourcing your bricks, feel free to use any color you have on hand for the parts NOT in LBG, DBG, red, or white.
If you enjoy seeing how my ships come together, I documented the full design process for this model on my Patreon. That behind-the-scenes post is available as a benefit for Tier 1 members, and includes concept art measurements, early prototypes, development of the internal SNOT framework, and photos from my physical test build.
