The USS Intrepid was Essex-class aircraft carrier of the United States Navy, commissioned in 1943 during World War II. Known as the “Fighting I,” it served in the Pacific Theater, participating in major battles such as Leyte Gulf and Okinawa. The Intrepid was also active during the Cold War, particularly in the Vietnam War, and was involved in NASA’s space program, recovering astronauts from space missions.
After nearly 30 years of service, the Intrepid was decommissioned in 1974. It was later preserved as a museum ship and is now part of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York City, where it serves as a popular educational and historical site.
