The T-62 was the final evolution of the T-54/55, with the design requirements initially being drafted due to the belief that the T-55’s 100mm gun would soon become outdated with the advent of newer and more heavily armored tanks in the future. To match this perceived threat, a new 115mm smoothbore gun was developed which allowed the T-62 to fire armor-piercing ammunition with muzzle velocities over 1600 m/s. Thus, at the time, it would have had superb anti-tank capability and had the added benefit of being able to fire a bigger HE shell. Despite these improvements, its price caused most Warsaw Pact countries (except Bulgaria) to disregard it, as in their view, the T-55 was still good enough. The majority of the export customers of the T-62 would come from the Arab states, mainly Egypt, Syria, and Iraq. In combat, it was appreciated for having solid armor penetration against enemy tanks, even ones viewed as being superior (i.e. the British Chieftain tank). In the USSR, many would be modernized with composite armor and improved electronics, with these seeing service even up to the current year.
